GamStop is a free self-exclusion service for people living in the UK (Great Britain and Northern Ireland). You register once, and every online gambling company licensed in Great Britain has to block you: you cannot log in to accounts you already hold, and you cannot open new ones. At registration you choose a minimum period of six months, one year, five years, or five years with auto-renewal. Once that period starts, it cannot be shortened or cancelled.
What most people miss is what happens afterwards. A GamStop exclusion does not expire by itself: when your minimum period ends, the block stays in place for up to a further seven years unless you contact GamStop and complete a removal process. The scheme is run by The National Online Self Exclusion Scheme Limited (company number 10504973) in Harrogate. It is genuinely free and will never ask for your bank or card details; anyone claiming to be from GamStop who does is running a scam, and GamStop asks that they be reported to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice.
If you are reading this mid-session or after a heavy loss, paperwork is not the useful step. The National Gambling Helpline is free and open 24 hours a day on 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, and 0808 2819 265 in Wales. Outside the UK, find a line for your country in our helplines directory or at findahelpline.com. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call your local emergency number.
How GamStop works
GamStop is a register, not a filter. It compares the details you gave at registration with the details you give a gambling company when you open an account or sign in. Every online gambling business licensed in Great Britain must check the register whenever anyone registers or logs in, and must also check the status of its existing account holders once a day. That daily check is why an account you opened years ago and forgot about also gets closed.
Because the block works on matching, your details are the weak point. GamStop asks for previous surnames, old email addresses and old postal addresses for exactly this reason: an account opened under a maiden name is only caught if that name sits on your record. You can add emails, numbers and addresses in your GamStop account at any time; a name change needs proof, such as a marriage certificate or deed poll document. The block takes up to 24 hours to become effective after you finish registering.
GamStop is not blocking software: it does nothing to your phone or laptop, and gambling sites still load in your browser after you register. It is also not a bank block, not a mark on your credit file, and not a ban from betting shops or casinos. Each of those is a separate tool, covered below.
Registering, and what happens to your accounts
Registration takes a few minutes at gamstop.co.uk. You give your title, name, date of birth, and every email address, mobile number and postal address you have used, then prove who you are. With a UK photocard driving licence you photograph both sides and take a selfie, and the match runs automatically in under a minute. Without one you answer questions drawn from your personal credit file, or fall back to a passport, provisional licence, Citizen Card or work ID showing your date of birth, checked by hand. That credit check is a soft search: visible only to you, and harmless to your credit score or a mortgage application.
Once the exclusion is live, operators you held accounts with must close those accounts, return any withdrawable balance, and remove you from their marketing databases. Balances come back from each gambling company on its own timetable, not from GamStop, so chase the company directly if the money does not arrive. Marketing is only half solved: you come off the email lists of firms you were registered with, but not of firms you never used, and gambling ads on social media and video platforms keep running until you mute them at the platform level.
How long GamStop lasts
| Option chosen at registration | Minimum period | What happens at the end |
|---|---|---|
| Six months | 6 months | Exclusion continues for up to 7 more years unless you request removal |
| One year | 1 year | Same: up to 7 more years unless you request removal |
| Five years | 5 years | Same: up to 7 more years unless you request removal |
| Five years with auto-renewal | 5 years, then another 5 | Renews automatically; you can switch auto-renewal off in your account, but only during the last six months of the period |
Six months is the floor and GamStop cannot go shorter. For a brief pause, individual gambling companies run their own "time out" tools, which suspend betting on that one site for anything from a day to six weeks. Auto-renewal has only existed since December 2024; earlier registrants can switch it on from their existing account.
Long periods are the norm. More than one in two people registering in the first half of 2026 chose five years and only about one in four chose the six-month minimum, according to GamStop registration data published on 16 July 2026; 614,738 people in the UK were registered by that point.
The seven-year rule is written into GamStop's terms of use: "until you contact the GAMSTOP Contact Centre following the expiry of your Minimum Exclusion Period, your self-exclusion will continue for up to a further seven years". Nobody tells you when the minimum period has passed; you check the start date and length yourself by signing in to your account.
Can you cancel GamStop early? No
GamStop's own answer is unambiguous: "we cannot remove anyone's exclusion early". There is no appeal, no fee, no medical exemption and no fast track, and contacting the helpdesk before your period expires will not change the answer. That rigidity is intentional: a period chosen in a calm moment is meant to survive a bad night.
Two situations usually sit behind the question. In the first, someone picked five years during a crisis and months later feels the choice was too heavy; nothing changes the period, but a live exclusion costs nothing and blocks nothing except gambling. In the second, the urge is present now and the block is in the way, which is the block working as designed. Our guide to handling a gambling urge at night covers that window.
How to remove GamStop once the minimum period has ended
- Sign in to your GamStop account and confirm the exclusion has actually expired. If you have lost access, call GamStop instead.
- Select "Request Removal" and complete the process by online chat or by phone on 0800 138 6518, free, 10am to 8pm every day.
- A cooling-off period of at least 24 hours begins when that conversation ends. Your exclusion stays fully active throughout, and you can cancel the removal request from your account at any point during it.
- Gambling companies then need time to update their records. If an account is still blocked 24 hours later, contact that company: GamStop cannot guarantee every operator lifts its own block.
Re-blocking is far quicker than removal. From the same GamStop account you can add a new six-month, one-year or five-year period without registering again.
What GamStop does not cover
| Not covered | Detail | What covers it instead |
|---|---|---|
| Gambling sites without a Great Britain licence | GamStop's terms state it is "unable to help prevent you from accessing gambling services that are operated by organisations which do not participate" | Blocking software on your devices |
| Betting shops, casinos, bingo halls, arcades | GamStop is online only | The venue schemes listed below |
| National Lottery draw games | Lotto and EuroMillions are outside the scheme; online instant win games and online scratchcards are covered | Exclusion settings inside your National Lottery account, including permanent exclusion |
| Your bank account and debit card | Deposits are blocked at the gambling site, not at the bank | A gambling block from your bank |
One geographic limit is easy to miss: people in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man can register, but are not guaranteed protection, because participating firms do not all serve those islands under their British licence.
Covering the gaps: venues, devices and your bank
Land-based gambling has its own free multi-operator schemes, each covering one type of venue in the area you name. The Gambling Commission lists four:
| Venue type | Scheme | How to register |
|---|---|---|
| Betting shops | GamStop Betting Shops, run by The Multi-Operator Self-Exclusion Scheme Ltd and previously known as MOSES | One free call to 0800 294 2060, or self-exclusion.co.uk |
| Casinos | SENSE | senseselfexclusion.com |
| Bingo premises | The Bingo Association | bingo-association.co.uk, in person or by calling the venue |
| Arcades, adult gaming centres, family entertainment centres, motorway services | bacta | bacta.org.uk or 020 3930 9769, weekdays 9am to 5pm |
On the device side, blocking software refuses to load gambling sites and apps regardless of who licensed them, which is the one thing GamStop cannot do. GamStop’s own help centre names Gamban as the blocking-software counterpart to the scheme. BetBlocker is free, run by a registered Scottish charity, and covers Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux and Fire OS with no installation limit. The TalkBanStop partnership that handed out free Gamban licences ended on 31 March 2026, and talkbanstop.com now redirects to Gamban's own site. Our comparison of GamStop against blocking software sets out which layer catches what.
Banks are the third layer. The Gambling Commission lists the UK banks offering a gambling transaction block, among them Barclays, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds, Monzo, NatWest, RBS, Santander and Starling. Several add friction to switching it off again, such as HSBC's cool-off period, during which transactions keep being declined after the restriction is lifted. See how bank gambling blocks work.
"Getting around GamStop"
GamStop only binds the companies inside it, so the entire workaround market consists of gambling sites holding no Great Britain licence. Sites marketed as "casinos not on GamStop" advertise directly against these searches.
They are not a loophole in the scheme; they sit outside the regulator entirely. Nothing obliges them to run identity or age checks to British standards, to give you an alternative dispute resolution route when a withdrawal is refused, or to return your balance if they close. You can check any gambling business against the Gambling Commission's public register. How that market works is covered in casinos not on GamStop.
A second, narrower meaning: because the block matches on personal details, an account opened with details missing from your record can slip through. That is a hole in your own record, and the fix is to add every old name, email and address you have used. Searching for a way past a block you set up yourself is a recognisable point in a relapse rather than a research question, and it is the moment when a device blocker, a bank block or a call to the helpline does more than any change to GamStop settings.
When GamStop does not seem to be working
If you can still log in to a gambling account, contact that company first: it holds the licence and it is the one breaking the rule. Participating in GamStop has been a condition of a British operating licence since 31 March 2020, under social responsibility code provision 3.5.5, and the Gambling Commission has suspended licences over it. The Commission takes confidential reports of rule-breaking but does not settle individual money disputes; for those, complain to the operator, then escalate to its dispute resolution provider.
If marketing keeps arriving, check whether it comes from a firm you actually had an account with; only those are obliged to drop you from their databases. If verification failed, or an account slipped through under an old name, the fix is the same: make your GamStop record complete and current, then check again.
Self-exclusion outside the UK
GamStop is not the strictest model. Sweden's Spelpaus, run by the state gambling authority, covers land-based venues as well as online sites and offers pauses as short as ten days alongside an open-ended option. Many countries have no national register at all, only account-level exclusion at individual operators. Our country-by-country guide to gambling self-exclusion maps what exists where; the UK help page collects the British helplines, treatment routes and blocking tools.
Frequently asked questions
Can you cancel GamStop early?
No. GamStop states plainly that it cannot remove anyone's exclusion early, and there is no appeal or exception. Contacting the helpdesk before your minimum period has expired will not change that, and there is no shorter period to switch to: six months is the floor.
How long does GamStop last?
The minimum period is six months, one year, five years, or five years with auto-renewal. After that minimum ends, the exclusion continues for up to seven more years unless you contact GamStop and complete the removal process. GamStop does not notify you when the minimum period expires, so you check the dates in your account.
How do I remove GamStop once my minimum period has ended?
Sign in to your GamStop account, confirm the period has expired, and select “Request Removal”, which is completed by online chat or by calling 0800 138 6518 free between 10am and 8pm. A cooling-off period of at least 24 hours then starts, during which the exclusion stays active and you can cancel the request. Individual gambling companies may take longer than that to lift their own blocks.
Does GamStop cover the National Lottery?
Partly. National Lottery draw games, including Lotto and EuroMillions, are not covered by GamStop. Online instant win games and online scratchcards are covered. To exclude yourself from draw games as well, use the limits and exclusion options inside your National Lottery account, which include permanent exclusion.
Can you get around GamStop?
Only by gambling with companies that hold no Great Britain licence, which means giving up every consumer protection that comes with one, including access to a dispute resolution provider. The register also matches on personal details, so an account under an old name or address may not be caught, which is a reason to keep your record complete rather than a workaround. If you are looking for a way past your own block, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24 hours.
