Register in ROFUS at rofus.nu with MitID. Then call StopSpillet, the state helpline, on 70 22 28 25. Treatment for gambling addiction is free and state-funded at centres across the country. The legal gambling age is 18.

Helplines and online chat
StopSpillet is the Danish Gambling Authority’s free national helpline for gambling problems: 70 22 28 25. Phone hours are Monday to Thursday 09:00–21:00 and Friday 09:00–17:00; chat runs Monday to Thursday 17:00–21:00 and Friday 14:00–17:00. Counselling is in Danish, and the line is for people who gamble, for relatives and for professionals.
StopSpillet.dk also hosts a free, anonymous self-test if you want to see where you stand before calling. Ours is at gambling self-test.
If you are thinking about ending your life, call 112, the emergency number across the EU and Norway. In Denmark the helpline is a state service, and nothing you say to it reaches your bank, your employer or a gambling company. A gambling helpline is not a crisis line; use both if you need to. Self-exclusion with ROFUS
ROFUS (Register Over Frivilligt Udelukkede Spillere, the register of voluntarily excluded players) is run by Spillemyndigheden at rofus.nu. You register with MitID, and it takes effect immediately. If you have no MitID, a paper form can be posted to the authority.
One registration covers online gambling from every Danish-licensed operator, every physical casino in Denmark, and betting in physical shops. It also enrols you in Nej tak til spilreklamer (no thanks to gambling ads), which stops direct marketing from licensed operators.
Periods you can choose
| Period | How it ends |
|---|---|
| 24 hours | Ends automatically |
| 1 month | Ends automatically |
| 3 months | Ends automatically |
| 6 months | Ends automatically |
| Permanent | You can ask Spillemyndigheden to delete it after one year, then confirm by logging in 7–30 days later |
A registration is binding: it cannot be cancelled during the period you chose. That is deliberate: a period you cannot talk yourself out of is what makes the register work.
One date detail matters. Retail betting only came inside ROFUS on 1 October 2023, and only for registrations made or renewed on or after that date. An older registration that has never been renewed still blocks online gambling and physical casinos but not bets in shops; renewing it fixes that.
ROFUS covers Danish-licensed operators. Offshore sites do not check it, so add a blocking app: see apps that block gambling sites.
Blocking gambling payments and sites
Denmark’s controls sit inside the gambling account rather than in the bank. Licensed operators must let you set, and must require you to set, a limit on how much you can deposit, and they must check ROFUS before allowing you to log in. If you are in the register, the operator must refuse access, and in the case of a permanent exclusion it must terminate the player relationship.
For anything the register does not reach, a device-level blocker is the next layer. If the debt has already built up, start with what to do about gambling debt rather than a new loan.
Free treatment and counselling
Treatment for ludomani (gambling addiction) is free and state-supported. Spillemyndigheden maintains the list of treatment centres; the centres themselves are independent institutions, not part of the authority.
Named providers on that list include Center for Ludomani (Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus, Esbjerg), Novavi SpilStop (Copenhagen, Glostrup, Roskilde, Frederikssund), Behandlingscenter Tjele (Copenhagen, Kolding, Aalborg, Aarhus), Klinik for Ludomani in Odense, Ludomaniklinikken Mindwork (Copenhagen, Ringsted), AlfaRehab (Copenhagen, Hillerød), Forskningsklinikken for Ludomani in Aarhus, and Allorfik in Greenland. Several also deliver treatment online, which is what most people use if the nearest centre is far away.
Support for family and friends
StopSpillet takes calls from relatives and from professionals in contact with someone who gambles, on the same number and at the same hours. Several of the state-supported treatment centres also work with partners and family members.
You cannot register another adult in ROFUS: MitID means it has to be them. What tends to help is separating finances and stopping the loans. See how to help someone with a gambling problem and the signs of a gambling problem.
Gambling law and the regulator
Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, licenses and supervises the market. Its label on a site is the marker of a Danish licence, and the authority publishes which operators hold one.
Gambling providers must ensure that people under 18 cannot access gambling; the lottery monopoly and charity lotteries are the exception at 16. Operators must also inform players about responsible gambling and pass on the contact details of Danish gambling-addiction treatment centres.
Online casino and betting are legal in Denmark under a licence from Spillemyndigheden. Unlicensed sites sit outside ROFUS, outside the deposit-limit rules and outside the complaints process.
Frequently asked questions
How do I self-exclude from gambling in Denmark?
Go to rofus.nu and register with MitID; without MitID you can post a paper form to Spillemyndigheden. Choose 24 hours, 1, 3 or 6 months, or permanent. The exclusion starts immediately, covers all Danish-licensed operators plus casinos and betting shops, and cannot be cancelled during the period you chose.
Can I cancel a ROFUS registration early?
No. Temporary registrations run to the end of the period you selected and then lift automatically. A permanent registration can be deleted at the earliest after one year: you ask Spillemyndigheden, then confirm the request by logging in between 7 and 30 days after submitting it.
Is gambling treatment free in Denmark?
Yes. Treatment for ludomani is free and state-supported at centres across the country, listed by Spillemyndigheden. The centres are independent institutions, several of them offer treatment online, and some work with relatives as well as with the person who gambles.
Does ROFUS block betting in physical shops?
Since 1 October 2023, yes — but only for registrations made or renewed on or after that date. Registrations from before then that have never been renewed still block online gambling and physical casinos, but not bets placed in kiosks and betting shops. Renewing the registration extends the cover.
